The History of the Nike Dunk: From Basketball to Streetwear

Few sneakers have had a journey as remarkable as the Nike Dunk. Born on the basketball court in 1985, it spent decades in relative obscurity before exploding into one of the most sought-after silhouettes in streetwear. Here's how it happened.

1985: Be True To Your School

Nike created the Dunk as part of their "Be True To Your School" campaign, releasing colorways that matched major college basketball programs. Syracuse orange, Kentucky blue, Michigan maize — the Dunk was designed to show school spirit on the court.

At the time, it was overshadowed by the Air Jordan 1, released the same year. The Dunk was a solid basketball shoe, but it wasn't a cultural phenomenon. Not yet.

The 1990s: The SB Revolution

In the late 1990s, skateboarders discovered that the Dunk's flat sole and padded collar made it perfect for skating. Nike took notice and in 2002 launched Nike SB (Skateboarding), putting the Dunk at the center of their skate line.

The Nike SB Dunk added a padded tongue, Zoom Air insole, and released in limited quantities with unique collaborations. Suddenly, the Dunk was rare, collectible, and cool.

Key SB Dunk Moments

  • **2005: Pigeon Dunk** — Jeff Staple's NYC-exclusive release caused actual riots outside Reed Space
  • **2005: Paris Dunk** — Only 202 pairs made, now worth over $50,000
  • **2020: Travis Scott x SB Dunk** — Brought mainstream attention back to SB
  • **2021: Off-White "Dear Summer"** — 50 variations, one collection

The 2020s Boom

When Nike retroed the Dunk Low in 2020 with the "Panda" colorway (simple black and white), it became the most popular sneaker on the planet. The combination of a clean silhouette, endless colorway possibilities, and accessible $110 retail price made it universal.

2026: Where We Are Now

The Dunk remains one of Nike's bestsellers. Collaborations continue to drive hype, while general releases keep it accessible. It's rare for a shoe to simultaneously be a hype beast grail AND an everyday beater. The Dunk does both.
